Literary Focus ♥ Camp Harmony

Question Number 5: How would you define the mood of people on the bus at beginning of the journey to Camp Harmony? at the end of the journey?

At first the Japanese-Americans were excited to go to Camp Harmony. I think the name of the camp sound very happy and what else could go wrong when a camp your going to have the word "Harmony" in it. These people also did not know where they were going, wishing for the best, and singing joyfully. Expecting the best, but in return getting the worst. On the way to Camp Harmony they were given a number identification. When they got to the Camp each family or person was assigned a room, as big as a living room to Sone. After a while Sone and everyone else felt like they were prisoners, criminals of some sort. They were blamed for that their home country did; the big thing that America is forgetting is the American in Japanese-American. But Sone's mother seems to always be in a decent mood, even though they are locked up in a prison like camp. She tries to get the good out of everything, showing her family in every bad is a good.

Freedom: The Right to be Free

How would you feel if you were being controlled? You have no rights, and people treat you like a robot. This is what citizens in a command economy are faced with everyday. Some places with a command economy are North Korea and Cuba. Every human being needs rights. People are not objects, they need freedom. Everyone is the same, simple and boring. Life is too short to blend in. Stuck inside the box and afraid to be yourself. Keeping your thoughts and dreams inside, and not having to right to express them. A command economy negatively affects its citizens by taking their freedom, and creativity.

What is the point of living without freedom? This is a quote in a short fable “The Wise Old Woman” by Yoshiko Uchida. “I have no use for old people in my village, anyone over seventy-one must be banished from this village”. Old people could not live in this village because the king or lord said they were useless. This quote shows the fact that the elders did not have any freedom. They were banished from the village and were forced to do whatever the government tells them to do no matter what. Being free is not only a word; it’s a way of life. Without freedom, people would act the same. No one will be different, no one will stand out, and no one will change the world.

Creativity is the most important thing in a human being’s life. Mao Zedong was the chairman of China’s Communist Government. He is a despot, and does not except new ideas. This is a line from a Social Studies textbook. "He urged millions of high school and college students to form groups called Red Guards. They attack educated people and criticized leaders who wanted change”. People who thought that the communist government will not work out in the future or fall would be killed. Mao was against all types of change. Before Mao died all citizens had to wear a grey uniform it shows that everyone was equal. Thinking outside the box is against the law; people are trained not to be themselves.

A command economy has no freedom and does not accept change which affects their country and citizens negatively. To fix this issue, people from all over the world need to treat people equally, letting them do things, and not be judged. Also have the right to be free. It does not hurt for people to share their ideas, it might cause change. When Mao died the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) it is the amount of money a country makes each year. Deng Xiaoping was the new dictator. He opened China’s social economy to make more many which increases China’s GDP. This caused a major increase of the economy for China. Some types of change can be good, but not all the time.
